Shifen Waterfall Walk Area, Pingxi

See why people call Shifen Waterfall Walk Area "Little Niagara of Taiwan." The cascade, 20 m (66 ft) high and 40 m (130 ft) wide, represents the broadest waterfall in Taiwan. Take a walk to the viewpoint, enjoying the scene of mountains and forests. At certain places along the river you might notice small vortices that carve holes into the bottom due to an uneven flow. The powerful current takes water into a pool below, where you can often see rainbows with water splashes. A visit to Shifen Waterfall Walk Area represents just the start of the adventure when you use our New Taipei online road trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Worth a visit if you have time. Not a long walk though. Its on the way route if you are going for sky lantern later.  more »
  • We went on a wet rainy day. The walk way is long but there are shops for souveniers and foods in between. There are even temples and statues of animals. One can also see the pinxi railway  more »

  • Beautiful waterfall, worth the travel which is not painstaking at all. Car is easy drive on wide well paved roads (for majority of way). Plenty of parking lots (closest to falls is NT30/h weekdays and NT40/h weekends or holidays; outside lots are NT100 each time but closer to railroad station and lanterns; about ten minute walk between the two of fast walker, green pedestrian walk lanes for safety). Weekend will be crowded so go weekday when possible. Fish pond so kids will enjoy feeding them (fish food vending machine nearby). Visit the various viewing stations for taking photos, some smaller areas may have fewer people because more stairs. Food stalls near waterfall so can buy snacks or bring own foods.
  • Shifen Waterfall + 十分老街 Our cruise ship stopped a few hours in Keelung Port, and thought to explore the area. Initially we were taking a private tour from the port terminal, and upon receiving good advice, we took a taxi 200 hundred meters away, near the bus terminal instead, paid normal fares, lots less than what the people charged in the port terminal., and were very happy with our "private tour". Shifen Waterfall is a must visit place for anyone visiting the area, and do not forget the 十分老街, especially during the lantern festival. But , beware of the number of visitors, especially during the Holiday.
