Pay a visit to Umayyad Mosque, one of the holiest and largest places of worship in the Islamic world, and considered a masterpiece of early Islamic architecture. The massive complex was first erected in 634 CE on the site of a Byzantine church believed to contain the head of John the Baptist, and also marking the place where ancient Aramean and Roman temples once stood. Rebuilt a number of times, the grandiose structure boasts mosaics, art pieces, and minarets from different time periods, as well as the mausoleum that contains the remains of Sultan Saladin in a wooden sarcophagus. One of the most beautiful mosques in the world and the most important historical and beautiful architectural and engineering. Damascus cannot be visited without going to the Umayyad Mosque more »
This is such a different, beautiful mosque with a long history - a mix of Persian and Ottoman detailing, so quite different from the blue ceramic tiling you see in other mosques. The courtyard and minaret are breathtaking. The inside is very spacious as well and can accommodate lots of visitors and prayers. Females are given brown cloaks to wear.
One of the oldest and largest mosque. Beautiful architect. It contains the head of John the Baptist. Great bazar (shops) around it. Local food and shopping experience
