Voltzberg Dome, Sipaliwini District

#4 of 7 in Nature in Suriname
Standing at a breathtaking 150 m (492 ft) above the tropical rainforest, Voltzberg Dome offers visitors a spectacular vantage point over their verdant surroundings. First explored in the 19th century by the German explorer Franz Voltz, the mountain summit commands views over a sparsely populated area largely untouched by mass tourism. Visit the area for a chance to go back in time to a place unchanged for centuries. Voltzberg Dome is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Sipaliwini District Edition.

  • The road to and from the Ralleighvallen and Voltzberg was a long trip for children. The spot was once the place to sleep beautifully overlooking the river. The next day a hefty walk with climbing on muddy paths, but each meter! The climb was halfway in the long run for the parents heavier than for the children. Beautiful view of the forest from the top. Please note, these are steep walls and no fences, so in case of rain (and thus smoothness) I would not recommend the climb. Especially since we eventually found the trek through the jungle more beautiful than the climb.

  • With a group of six, and under the guidance of Wilfred guide camp we did the walk to the Granite dome, about 15 km in total and a climb of less than 200 meters. Thick Jan from this group was and Miss Silvie only with quite a lot of trouble. Then could hardly walk from the blisters, Silvie and had thick on three quarters of the uphill return journey on a tree are left because he could no longer. Nevertheless, we found the climb great, with a beautiful view and had not much trouble with it, especially if you drink at least two litres of water to maintain your fluid level. On top of a beautiful and far views, great. The Downer came when I asked where were the now famous mountain chickens, at the foot of the Voltzberg? The at-Guide Rajan (apparently of All Suriname Tours) then said only in retrospect that we had to agree, in advance (and have to pay extra) and that it was too far for thick Jan and Miss Silvie and therefore had decided that that detour to the ' leak ' where they usually sat at. There he had mentioned it, and Moreover, we had best be able to run a few km.
