Petrified Forest, Merowe

3.6
#4 of 6 in Parks in Sudan
At Petrified Forest witness the fossilisation of ancient trees. These trees-turned-to-stone tell the story of forests a million years old. Large chunks of petrified wood show the scale of how large the trees once were--some are the size of a car. You can feel the texture of fossilized bark and look at the trees' aging rings. Because the area is undeveloped, consider hiring a guide to take you to the spot. • It is impressive to see a log on the ground, split with its layers of Cork and wood color and then touching it and feeling the hard stone. Is the first petrified forest I see in my life and the amount of fragments around about hundred meters speaks volumes about climate changes over the centuries. Not to be missed

  • Coming from the Merowe to El Kurru, veered off the road and drove us to a geological curiosities – fossilized trees (skrzemieniałych). The fossils probably count more than 200 million years. All of this looks strange – on the sand of the desert lie the broken tree trunks. The bark looks natural, only touching the feel that is hard and stone.
