Sudan National Museum, Khartoum

3.9
A millennia of Sudanese history from black pharaohs to the black sultanate comes to life at Sudan National Museum. Built in 1965, the modernist building overlooking the confluence of the two Niles houses an impressive collection of stone relics from various civilizations that once lived in the vast territory of present-day Sudan. From Stone Age artifacts to Sudanese Nubia, the three-story building also houses Coptic frescoes and mosaics and elaborate Islamic art with jewelry, coins, and amulets. The museum grounds has a collection of statues and remains from three temples of Sudanese Nubia rescued from the dam construction site here; they're reconstructed over a pool representing the Nile. • Amazing place to learn about Sudan. One of the underrated countries, living in the shadow of Egypt. They have almost as amazing culture and history as Egypt but little do people know about it. The only issue is with infrastructure and a bit of the airport drama here and there.
  • Laid out logically from pre-historic. There is very little mention of 20th Century which would have been extremely interesting. Many of the exhibits don't have labels so it is hard to know what you are looking at.
