  • We visited here in October 2015 on an overnight stop between the east coast of Spain and Bilbao. A must to visit in Tauste.  more »
  • The church of Santa Maria together with its tower is the most emblematic building of Tauste. Recent research brings new theories about the construction of the tower that placed it as part of the mosque that necessarily had to have given the large Muslim population found in the excavations of the Islamic necropolis of Tauste. In addition to the tower we also tour all the works of art containing the majestic Mudejar building of the thirteenth century of the church of Santa Maria.

  • Tauste is located on a small height near the left bank of the Arba River. Like the other four Villas whose number gives its name to the Shire, it retains the historical-hierarchical title of Villa Infanzona that in the past granted it various privileges and exempted from the payment of taxes. It is in the 8th century, under Muslim rule, that Tauste first appeared documented as part of the large area controlled by the Banu Qasi family. In 1115 it was recaptured by Alfonso I for Christianity, a violent conquest that resulted in the disappearance of the local Muslim population. Its parish church of Santa Maria stands on top of the town center built in Mudejar style. About its dating there are a series of doubts both in the account of the documentation that has been handled so far and in terms of its tower, so we will address it laterIt is a church of The Levantine Type made entirely of rigged brick of mane regular to rope and blight in alternating yarns to give more rhythm and solidity to the work. Outside it has a five-sided polygonal headboard that is circular to the interior and side walls with buttresses and the chapels that open between them protruding slightly in the lower part. The tower that stands out attached to the foot section, of chronology of the moment uncertain since it is not at all clear that it is a contemporary work of the temple, being most likely the repurposed minaret of the Muslim mosque that is would rise in this very place. Both the primitive facades and the apse of the headboard are masked by later extensions of the side chapels
