Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Castile and Leon / Province of Segovia / Segovia / Alcazar of Segovia
A fortress that was part of the inspiration for Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle, Alcazar of Segovia is one of Spain's most popular historical sites, once home to the Spanish royal family. The first thing you'll notice about the castle is its characteristic shape, designed to resemble the bow of a ship. Although this design may have been intended to showcase Spain's military might, it also served an aesthetic purpose. In 1862, the original interior was damaged in a fire, but many of the rooms are restored. Don't miss the Hall of Kings, where you'll find a mural depicting Spanish royalty through Juana la Loca. One of the more interesting castles we’ve been too. If you’re staying in Madrid I highly recommend renting a car and coming up here! Parking is cheap and very easy on the street and you can walk the entire city within 15 minutes.
I'd give it 6 stars if I could. Truly stunning castle in a dramatic position, at the end of a rocky outcrop which the city of Segovia is built on. It's been rebuilt several times over the centuries, resulting in its current iconic appearance. The interior is also very impressive with ornate ceilings, throne room, weapons and suits of armour. It's worth visiting the viewpoints across the valley and from the river below to see the castle from other positions.
