  • Lovely to walk around and see the views. None of the buildings were open. Wish some of the info panels were in English, as our Spanish was not good enough to understand all the info.  more »

  • This sanctuary is probably the most interesting building in the Romanesque of La Rioja. Its architectural beauty is joined by the excitement of its rugged and solitary location, as well as the legendary and esoteric character that has always characterized it. Its foundation took place in the first half of the twelfth century, apparently promoted by infante Ramiro de Navarra, son-in-law of El Cid, who attended the first crusade and participated in decisive weapons in the Holy Land. On his return he organized a kind of cavalry order called 'La Divisa'. Those who belonged to it, male descendants of hers, gathered in a rectangular room that is attached to the northern side of the sanctuary and created at the same time as it. The designation of the shrine was given by Don Ramiro in honor of the Jerusalem Temple Probation Pool, whose location was apparently revealed to him supernaturally during his stay in the Holy City. It was built in stone of seating, has a semicircular apse covered with oven vault; it is smooth, with a window orned with two columns and an imposted ledge under it. On the ledge of its eaves is preserved chessed in some areas and some baskets decorated with hugging couples and a monster with the tail on the back. The ship, taller and wider than the apse, is reinforced by stirrups. In the center of the south facade is the main door, in which on prismatic jambs depart three archives surrounding a smooth eardrum, on which is a huge coat of arms of the Currency, placed here around 1530. On the facade of the gallital is a simple window and above it the bell tower, square in shape. The eaves' eaves' beds are smooth, except for two of the southern cover decorated with a human figure with an arm resting at the waist and a dog tied to a stick; among them are metopas with florons. The interior is covered by barrel vaults, reinforced with three half-point fajones arches on columns with capitals with different motifs. The presbytery is rectangular and covered in the same way. Here were long revered a splinter of the cross of Christ and an image of Our Lady supposedly carved by the Evangelist St. Luke, relics brought by Don Ramiro on his return from the Holy Land. The apse and the walls of the presbytery are also possible to observe remains of the frescoes that decorated them, although very damaged. The ship has four equal sections. The meeting room, accessible from the inside and outside by a door to the west, is illuminated with saeteras. Around the shrine extends an interesting medieval necropolis (discovered in excavations carried out between 1976 and 19878), with large numbers of anthropomorphic tombs, carved many of them into the natural rock of the soil, and others independent as a way of Sarcophagus.
