Created by a long-ago coastal eruption, Montana Roja looms 171 m (561 ft) over the far southern coast of Lanzarote, providing spectacular views of the glimmering Atlantic. The 166-hectare (410-acre) reserve surrounding the red volcano includes Leocadio Machado and La Tejita beaches--each of which runs for 3 km (1.8 mi)--salt water pools, and wetlands frequented by various bird species. The Spanish government has declared the area a special nature reserve, so do your part to help preserve its pristine character.   • Cracking views of Playa Blanca, it is worth the effort to get up. Make sure you have good footwear, ie no flipflops.  more »
