San Miguel de Lillo, Oviedo

4.6
World heritage site · Religious Site · Tourist Spot
In a country full of magnificent cathedrals, San Miguel de Lillo can seem nondescript. The relatively small size of this 9th-century church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, belies the critical role that it played in maintaining Christianity during Moorish rule. Take note of the pre-Romanesque style that would later become prominent in Spanish cathedral design. Inside, columns (as opposed to pillars) separate the three naves, which are decorated with Byzantine and North African motifs. The hillside location offers fine views of Oviedo and the surrounding mountains. Plan to see San Miguel de Lillo and other attractions that appeal to you using our Oviedo road trip website.

  • The Church of St. Michael is very close to Santa Maria. It gives the impression of a small rural Church, but it is a third of the old one. The rest was destroyed in the middle ages by soil erosion...  more »
  • Very nice little church on the top of a hill worth a visit. We drove up and parked on the side of the road - others walked up the hill (which is what you are supposed to do).  more »
