#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Merida
Alcazaba is the oldest Moorish fortress in Spain, dating back to 835, when Adb ar-Rahman II of Córdoba needed a base from which to command the city after its 805 rebellion. The structure contains even older Roman-Visigothic walls, which Abd ar-Rahman fortified and extended to include 25 lookout towers. He also fortified the Roman reservoir, which filtered water from the Guadiana River to sustain the city during sieges. Descend the steps to the reservoir where you can see this ancient architectural feature while escaping the sun. The building is accessible from the ancient Roman Bridge over the Guadiana--this entrance was historically used to control movement of people and goods into the city. If you're planning to visit other historic monuments in the city, take advantage of the pass that allows visits to multiple sites. • Unlike most of the Roman Ruins the Moorish site is not as well preserved. The overall structure is very impressive, but the details are not too well defined.  more »

  • This Alcazaba Ruin is a beautiful historical place. Many parts are good explained. But just in spanish. I couldn't read it English. One star less. From the wall I had a great view over the river and bright who were next to the Ruin.
  • Dont come here it's a con. I've been to hundreds of ancient fortresses throughout Europe and this one is NOT worth it. The center area is STILL closed off. All you have a view of the bridge from the wall which you can just take a photo from the outside anyways and a underground water pond
