Palacio Real de El Pardo, Madrid

4.2
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Built as a hunting lodge, Palacio Real de El Pardo was also the residence of Francisco Franco, the Spanish dictator. King Enrique III of Castile built a pavilion on the site in 1406, but it wasn't until 141 years later that Emperor Carlos V constructed the rest of the palace. It was renovated in the 18th century, and became the neoclassical structure you'll see on your visit. Tour the frescoed room painted by Gaspar Becerra, and admire the artwork of Vincenzo Carducci and Cabrera on the walls. Then make the rounds of the plazas, gardens, parks, and other buildings in the vast complex. • Very cute and quiet day trip about 15 minutes from Madrid. Take the 661 bus from Moncloa. The palace isn't always open so check hours and dates before going. It's free Wednesday afternoons as well.
