Owned by the Franciscans since the 13th century, La Rabida Monastery was declared a Spanish national monument in 1856. The buildings at the site were constructed in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, as evidenced by the Gothic and Moorish Revival architecture popular during those periods. Christopher Columbus stayed at the friary for two years after his first request to sail to the Indies was denied. With the help of the friars, he was able to submit his proposal to Queen Isabel a second time. Visit the on-site museum full of relics from the New World and the discovery of America, as well as a cloister and reception room, all in pristine condition because they are still in use today. Interesting and a well worth a visit but being given 3 headsets among 4 of us with the assumption that our 11 year old daughter wouldn't need one is pretty rubbish. It costs nothing and there were only two families visiting at the time. Hence only 2 stars.
An interesting add-on to the tour of the Columbus Museum in Huelva. Very well presented and the tour offers telephone commentaries in the language of your choice. All exhibits and rooms are numbered so that you can pick whichever commentary you wish to listen to, one at a time, in any order that you wish, i.e. you do not necessarily have to tour the monastery in a set order so you can by-pass any tour groups if you wish.
