Convento de Santa Clara, Carmona

Convento de Santa Clara (Convent of Santa Clara) is located in Carmona, Spain. Founded in 1460, it was one of the first to be built in the convent architecture style of the city. It enjoyed papal and royal privileges throughout its history. Design changes in the 15th through18th centuries, preserved without undergoing major changes, distorted the structure considerably from its original appearance. The church and cloister are important examples of Andalusian Moorish architecture of the early 16th century. The Mudéjar church underwent renovation in 1664 in the Baroque style. Six depictions of the life of St Clare are by Juan de Valdés Leal.

  • Strange to see an active convent this days, even more see active nuns working. The church in the Convento is beautifully decorated and well maintained.  more »
  • Interesting to see a nunnery that is actually working. No access to their quarters but one can clearly see where they are. There is a sweet little courtyard and three floors to climb with a bell...  more »

  • A quaint and reverent convent in Carmona. Many interesting items to view in their museum and a beautiful worship area. Storks from North Africa have taken residence for the winter and their calls add to the experience.
  • The convent of the clarisse nuns is worth the visit, both for the church, simple but in its original way, and for the very good cakes. But to me will remain the memory of the cloister, which in itself has no particular artistic value, but gives a sense of peace (peace, not silence) difficult to find nowadays.
