Cheonmachong Tomb, Gyeongju

4.2
Cheonmachong Tomb offers a rare glimpse into a royal tomb. First excavated in 1973, the tomb is supposedly the final resting place of an unknown king of the Silla kingdom from the 5th or 6th century (exact dates undetermined as of yet). While many tombs in the area have undergone excavation, at present, the public may access just one. From outside, the tombs look like mounds of earth, but on the inside of this wood-lined tomb, you’ll discover hundreds of artifacts, many of which are replicas. Burial gifts originally surrounded the tomb, though, many were removed for preservation after excavation. Among the 11,500 artifacts uncovered in the tombs was an incredible gold crown embellished with jade beads. Cheonmachong Tomb is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Gyeongju Edition.

  • It was definitely worthwhile making a quick stop to enter this tomb to see the inside and learn more about its construction. It's very interesting.  more »
  • This tomb is located in Tumuli Park. The name of the king is unknown, but in his grave one found many images of a flying horse, which is why the king was named Cheonmachong. (Flying Horse) It is an area with dozens of burial mounds. The special thing is that in this burial mound you can see how it was built up, and how the Kings were buried there. You can also see what kind of jewelry, clothing and tools they used in time.

  • Cheonmachong is an ancient royal tomb that was excavated in 1973. There are significant artifacts to be found inside, including an original piece of art that was created on a saddle "mudguard." The piece of art is of a flying white horse, or "cheonmachong." The entrance fee is very nominal.
  • One of ancient tombs in Silla dynasty. Good learning experience to my daughters
