Trip Planner: Africa / South Africa / Gauteng / Greater Johannesburg / Johannesburg / Origins Centre Museum
Touch some of the world’s oldest known artworks and admire the world’s longest continuous art forms at Origins Centre Museum, a modern museum with an impressive collection of Stone Age artifacts and fossils. Opened in 2006, the museum features various stone tools, hominid skulls, symbolic and spiritual items, and examples of visually appealing rock art among over 9,000 artifacts. Learn about the meaning of ancient arts and crafts and understand their history and evolution. See entire burial mounds brought from UNESCO-protected excavation sites, and get an insight into the lives of San people. A large, stuffed, twisted-horn antelope illustrates the life of our ancestors and provides a good photo opportunity. Origins Centre Museum Reviews
I spent about 2 hours at this museum. The exhibits are self-explanatory but the audio provides even more information. The rock art in this museum is amazing. I would definitely not miss this... more »
Trying to get into this place is like entering a prison. No clear signage whatsoever where to enter. I am near the facility but security tells me I have to go down the street to a visitors entrance... more »
I have been to the museum before to view the displays, which I enjoyed, but this time I went with a small group on a guided tour. Our guide, Brian, was knowledgeable and engaging and made the group (which was made up mostly of teenagers) laugh. I had a wonderful time at the museum, where I felt there was a good balance of focus on paleontology, history and art. I would highly recommend a visit and especially a guided tour.
I was very excited to go here but it was not what you hope. It advertises a history of humankind but then it is mostly rock art and has a strong emphasis on the San people. It was also very creepy, poorly lit, and no one else was there. I do not recommend this attraction. I got out as soon as possible.
