Admire the symbols of French Huguenot heritage in South Africa at The Huguenot Memorial Monument, a large, modernist marble complex set in a well-manicured garden. Inaugurated in 1948 and based on a French design, the central piece of the monument is a figure of a woman holding a broken chain and a bible, standing on a carved globe representing religious freedom. Slim, elegant, triple marble arches symbolize the Holy Trinity and, topped by a cross representing the Huguenot faith, tower over the statue against the backdrop of dark, ragged hills. A curving colonnade behind the arch reflects in the large man-made pool lined with flowerbeds, providing a good photo opportunity. Take a walk, relax, and enjoy the picturesque scenery. It is worth taking a moment of tranquillity in these places...
We could not access this iconic monument of Franschoek on a Sunday. Very dissapointing as all access gates were closed. A note on the main gate advised to fetch a key at the church across the road. more »
Beautiful gardens and amazing mountain backdrop. But the gates were locked and we could not go in and have a close look. Had to view from the street
Still one of my favorite places in SA. Picture perfect!
