Štanjel Castle, Stanjel

For a bit of nostalgia, go to Štanjel Castle, overlooking the Vipava Valley. Fortified against Ottoman attacks in the 17th century, this town suffered great damage during World War II. Slowly renovated during the subsequent years, the town remains an important reminder of history, with its medieval castle, parish church, and garden, which overlooks the karst landscape below it. • Stanjelu Castle was built in medieval times. In 1500, he became the property of the Habsburgs. During World War I, he was used as a hospital and was severely destroyed in World War II. And it's not exactly yet rebuilt. However, it has retained its nature and historical value. The castle has exhibitions, a tour desk, an image gallery and a graphic artist Lojze Spacala, a restaurant, and is surrounded by preserved 15TH century walls. There is also a castle tower, a courtyard and numerous stairs and a very old well.

  • A medieval village whose main interest is the central castle. Not much to visit or see. You don't have to make an express trip to this village but there's plenty to walk around for a few minutes.
