Postojna Caves, Postojna

#1 of 10 in Things to do in Postojna
Ride on a double-track railway through the underground tunnels of Postojna Caves and see colorful rock formations, as well as the 100 species that make the caves their home. One of the largest caves in the extensive karst plateau features 21 km (13 mi) of passages, galleries, and chambers illuminated by electric lighting. A historical train takes you to large halls adorned with chandelier-like stalactites and limestone "sculptures," such as "the brilliant," a shiny white limestone formation. Meet the olm, a salamander popularly called the dragon's offspring or the human fish. Archduke Ferdinand I was the first to officially visit the cave in 1819, but several writings on the cave walls date all the way back to the 13th century. Note that audioguides are available in a range of languages. Discover how to plan a Postojna trip in just a few steps with Inspirock's itinerary builder.

  • We had already visited natural caves. These are the largest, widest, various. Well organized from the parking lot to the visit. Price above average but it is worth all (can be combined with other attractions on site). The millions of visitors who have appreciated them are witnesses to how much nature can be a truly unbeatable engineer. Jewellery for adults and children.

  • Hard to say that these caves are not beautiful and impressive. It is ideal for families with young children, because it is very secure. But, in the image of the train, this is a little amusement park, tourist factory. It's armored tourists who come by bus whole, even in May. Visit not super nice at the time. Those who love nature not concreed will prefer, like me, Skocjan and Krizna!

  • Simply superb! A natural phenomenon brought to the convenience of tourists without harming the nature. Brilliant effort by Slovenian authorities to ensure this. The guide rushed a bit too much. Hope they give visitors some more time. The train ride is good, but a hike into the caves would be lot more enjoyable. Few stretches are steep, but not very difficult. Elders who are comfortable walking can easily manage. The baby dragon is a must watch. In summary, don't miss it if you are in Slovenia. In fact, worth visiting Slovenia for this!
