Ljubljanski Grad, Ljubljana

3.7
Walk the steep climb or take a funicular to reach Ljubljanski Grad on the top of the hill, offering panoramic views of the Old Town. Visible from every corner of the city, the castle was built in the middle of the 15th century and served as a military hospital and arsenal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Walk over the remains of the fortifications turned into a promenade and join a guided tour, where costumed characters representing different historical periods will take you back to the time of wars, Ottoman invasions, and Habsburg rulers. The castle houses restaurants serving traditional Slovene food, and hosts art exhibitions, concerts, theatre shows and an open-air cinema. Shop for traditional handcraft at the gallery by the entrance. Add Ljubljanski Grad and other attractions to your Ljubljana trip itinerary using our Ljubljana trip itinerary tool .

  • Climb to see the panorama of the city from the walls of the castle, it is worth. Inside the courtyard there is a bar-restaurant and there are some walking points on the walls (not so many). I can't judge the inside of the castle because I didn't pay the entrance. Outside the walls you will find yourself immersed in greenery and here you can have a break and picnic. I highly recommend that you take the funicular to climb (budget) and descend into town from one of the various trails that bring you downtown.

  • The structure is beautiful and well kept, all areas are to be visited also those for a fee. You need to know that 50% can be visited free of charge if you do not want to buy the ticket and maybe only use the funicular. I suggest to take the audio guides or however check where to start the visit, as we left in a clockwise direction and instead entering to the right there was the exposition with the history of the Slovenian castles and the cards for a treasure hunt to be done around in the castle To receive a tribute (which would certainly have been fun to follow with the daughters). We walked in for last thing and we couldn't redo the whole route of course

  • Nice surrounds. Castle is a real landmark. At 7.5 euros, did not pay to enter. City has great wealth of free walks, a city centre free from cars, and is very picturesque. Highly recommended. Views from castle hill amazing.
  • Rode up in the funicular railway and had a great meal in one of the restaurants. We have visited the castle before and enjoyed the tour. Well worth a visit. A very steep walk up and down if you don't use the railway!
