Vrsic Pass - Julian Alps, Kranjska Gora

Renamed "Russian Road" in 2006, Vrsic Pass - Julian Alps is a high mountain pass that runs through the heart of the Julian Alps. The road was built 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above sea level during World War I by Russian prisoners of war. Hike the cobbled road or cycle to the summit while admiring the exceptional vistas of other peaks and slopes. Watch for Ajdovska Deklica, a naturally carved face of a maiden in a rock. Have a cup of coffee or consider staying overnight at one of the five mountain huts along the way and at the top of the pass. The trails are easy to follow, even for children. • We only did a few bends of this pass up to the famous Russian chapel dues to time constraints (and restless kids) but it was amazing. Stopped at the first hut for a quiet & cheap beer - you cant go wr...  more »
  • The basic place where you can do most trips to the surroundings. The journey from Krajská Gory takes about 15 minutes by car and is very steep, but basically hassle free and in any case safe. Along the way you'll find the Russian chapel, which can be stopped for a while. Parking was not a problem, but we arrived relatively early (approx. 9 a.m.). In addition, you could park for free at the cottage called Erjavčeva Koča. For less savable tourists is a bit of a problem that most of the surrounding routes are quite demanding, it involves often high elevation and mainly ferrata. However, several circuits can be found, which are also suitable for families with older (10 +) children-eg. A trip to the Slemenovo Spitz, which I really recommend, because it includes magnificent views in relatively small exertion (the most demanding is probably the first climb, which is really steep, but at a lower rate can certainly be managed). However, it is still to be remembered that it is a mountain hiking, so it will not be a whole tomorrow. If you do not want to go too much and still see something from the Vršiče, I recommend Poštarski Dom-this is a really unpretable and short hike with nice view.

  • As we were driving from Russian Chapel, the weather got worsen upon reaching Vrsic Pass. It was middle of May and it was snowing heavily. The attached video says it all. However, it is a nice experience.
  • Beautiful views at the top. Very steep drive up! If you have an older car, make sure to have plenty of gas and water in the car!
