Vrsic Pass - Julian Alps, Kranjska Gora

Renamed "Russian Road" in 2006, Vrsic Pass - Julian Alps is a high mountain pass that runs through the heart of the Julian Alps. The road was built 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above sea level during World War I by Russian prisoners of war. Hike the cobbled road or cycle to the summit while admiring the exceptional vistas of other peaks and slopes. Watch for Ajdovska Deklica, a naturally carved face of a maiden in a rock. Have a cup of coffee or consider staying overnight at one of the five mountain huts along the way and at the top of the pass. The trails are easy to follow, even for children. • This way you can not leave... It is not too difficult even for a novice driver, but it requires attention to the corners, because coming from the opponent probably do not know the rules;]. At the top in nice weather great views, but you can hit the clouds and then the Kiszka-nothing can be seen. At the pass there is a shelter/restaurant Ticarjev House, where you can eat something or enjoy a warm tea. The first time I rode this road by bus. It was a dozen years ago. In Tarvisio the driver instead of turning to the Planica as I told him (I was a pilot) stated that he would not "break" on a sharp bend and go to planica around another road. So he chose 40 serpentine and climbing up a mile and a half up. The most enjoyed on the corners, where, despite raising the wagon on the cushions, the back scented with a paving stone-but the curse-a whole happiness on each other;]

  • Hired a car a drove the Vrsic Pass with my other half from Lake Bled. Beautiful scenery and was empty in mid April! That did mean the restaurants we passed were either closed or functioning on a limit...  more »

  • Pretty long hairpin curves and the road is not wide. There are spots where you can stop in between and enjoy the awesome view of mountains and pine trees. Those who want to Ski, they can. Mountain huts are also there along the path . Worth a drive!.
  • Gorgeous place, easy to get here by car and you can park the car and go hiking or climbing easily. Here are several mountain huts and quite a lot of trails you can choose from. The mountains look great, you can explore both sides of the pass. We have spent here several days, but we could only explore a small percentage of the trails:) definitely coming back!
