Koper Cathedral and Bell Tower, Koper

4.2
See one of Slovenia's oldest bells and take in excellent views of the bay at Koper Cathedral and Bell Tower, whose simple exterior with Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements belies a luxurious Baroque interior. A large oval window above the main portal dominates the facade plated with white marble. Built in the 12th century, the church and the tower were restored on several occasions. The four-story tower holds a bell from 1333; for a small fee you can climb to the upper terrace and enjoy panoramic views of the bay. Admire the 18th-century Venetian-style frescoes adorning the interior walls of the church, and behind the altar don't miss the 14th-century chiseled sarcophagus of St. Nazarius, featuring the image of the bishop on the lid. • Built in 1187, when the center became Bishop's seat, the church is dedicated to the assumption and San Nazario. Become Duomo, it rises since then on the main square of the city where there are also the Palazzo Pretorio and the Loggia. Restructured several times it is characterized by a gothic-Venetian façade in the lower part and Romanesque with the beautiful rose window in the upper one. The interior, in which there are many works of art of great value, among which a Carpaccio, is typically Baroque. Imposing and massive the bell tower, born as Tower of defense in the XII century and to which was added the cusp in the SEVENTEENTH century.

  • It is not a stunning cathedral like Notre Dame or another more sumptuous, but for the Kopper standards surely the most beautiful. It is in the historic center and if you climb to the top you will have the opportunity to delight in a beautiful view. Next has several very typical little alleys and a small trade where you can buy souvenirs and take delicious ice creams. I went in September/18 and it was hot. I loved walking them streets of Kopper and very surprised me the cleanliness of the Slovenian cities. I'd really like to get back to that amazing country.
