At Kobarid Museum (Kobariski muzej) learn about one of the bloodiest battles of World War I, which Ernest Hemingway vividly described in his novel "A Farewell to Arms." Unlike most of the battles, which were fought in the trenches, this one took place on hilly terrain. A very modern two-building complex houses graphic exhibits documenting the course of the fighting and the lives of soldiers. See photographs, uniforms, weapons, personal items, maps, and large landscape models. Most of the text is in English and you can also watch a 10-minute film in several languages to get the big picture. • It's an excellent museum if you are willing to know about the first world war. Although it's well made, very very sad while you stroll between the images of the cruel war. There are also other histori...  more »
  • On the upper floor there is a room-sized representation of the whole valley and all the surrounding mountain massifs, where battles for Karfreit raged in the First World War. Through an animation of the movements of the troops involved, projected very cleverly by two floor-mounted projectors, one can understand the decisive phases of the battles in time lapse. That's the best representation I've ever seen. It is a completely different experience to see these movements in the mountains than you can imagine on two-dimensional maps. Because of those few minutes alone, the drive to the museum has paid off. The staff are friendly and at pains and the weapons and equipment that are displayed are able to paint a vivid picture. The unequivocal message of the whole house is: Live and keep the peace, because war is hell-here it was freezing cold, but no less ghastly.

  • Very good museum. Explains a lot about the region and it's effects on the people.
  • A deeply moving museum, exploring the battle of Caporetto and its aftermath. This place, combined with a visit to the church and Charnel house that sits above the town,, gives you an insight into the terrible Winter War that was fought here in 1917 between the Italians and the Central Powers. From here you can see the mighty mountains of the Julian Alps, in which both sides list 10s of 1000s of men. On the day that I visited, the sky's were blue and the weather warm but the snows still sat on the mountains. The conditions up there in the winter of 1917 were horrific. The Italian Charnel House built above the town, contains the bones of more than 7000 Italian soldiers killed on the Soča Front. It's topped by the 17th-century Chutch of St Anthony. A sobering but worthwhile visit.
