Built into a steep cliff above the lake, Bled Castle offers magnificent views of the small island on the lake, two nearby towns, and the surrounding mountains. German Emperor Henry II donated the castle buildings, arranged around two courtyards, to the bishop of Brixen in 1011. The castle features interesting historical exhibits and a small chapel. Visit the wine cellar and ask the monks to tell you stories about the castle and Slovenia's wine regions. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Julian Alps from the castle's terraces. • Host to since great views. It's open until 8 in the summer and it's s lot quieter then too. You can get the last shuttle bus from town (green line I think) for 1€, that gets you there early evening, explore the castle, enjoy the view, eat a cream slice then there's a nice walk back down to town via a footpath which starts on the car park (down on the right as you leave the castle).
  • I have to admit, that the castle is beautiful, and the view is really magnificent. The only problem is a really high entrance fee (changed recently to 11€ for adults or 7€ for students). To be honest, I expected something more (more exhibitions or something else) for this price. The castle is accessible by car or by walk (by walk it takes approximately 20-30 minutes from the bus station - it depends on your physical condition (a lot of stairs)).
