Michalska Brana, Bratislava

#5 of 243 in Historic Sites in Slovakia
Historic Site · Landmark
Topped with the statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon, Michalska Brana represents the oldest preserved part of the city's medieval fortifications. Built around 1300, the gate acquired its present appearance during an 18th-century reconstruction. Follow the marked historical crown path through the gate and notice a disk with a compass pointing in the directions of the world's major cities. The bridge on the other side of the passage arches over the last remaining section of a medieval moat. Visit the clock tower to see the exhibition of weapons there and climb to the sixth-floor balcony for vistas of the old town, castle, and surrounding landscapes.
