Honor the men and women of the Commonwealth who lost their lives in the line of duty during World War II with a trip to Kranji War Memorial. The memorial is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, a scenic hillside cemetery where you'll find rows and rows of more than 4,400 white gravestones. The memorial pays tribute to men and women from all over the world, as well as the 69 Chinese servicemen who were killed by the Japanese in 1942. Sitting hilltop are several significant memorials, including the Singapore Memorial, Military Cemetery, and State Cemetery. Kranji War Memorial reviews
Like many visits to war cemeteries, quiet, humbling, peaceful. Impeccably maintained. Worth a visit, especially if you have never been to a war cemetery. more »

Beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, this is the final resting place of over 4,400 soldiers who died fighting for the British Empire against the Japanese, and a further 27,000 more are commemorated here with their names inscribed in huge stone monoliths. These men serving in the armed forces were recruited from India, Malaya, Australia and of course Great Britain, and a scan of the names reveals the high diversity of nationalities, ethnicities and backgrounds, all fighting for the same cause. A very sombre, sobering and sad place to come and pay your respects. For a vivid portrait of Singapore's downfall and the British handover to the Japanese, read The Singapore Grip by J G Farrell.
The importance and historical significance of this memorial can not be overstated. Located in a key location, one of the first landing sites of the Japanese invasion of Singapore during World World 2, it is a fitting reminder and appropriate location to pay respects to so many that have lost their lives in the defence and preservation of the freedoms we enjoy today. Regardless of whether or not you are a historian, military person or visitor, I highly recommend dropping by to wander and pay your respects.
