The Smederevo Fortress is a medieval fortified city in Smederevo, Serbia, which was temporary capital of Serbia in the Middle Ages. It was built between 1427 and 1430 on the order of Despot Đurađ Branković, the ruler of the Serbian Despotate. It was further fortified by the Ottoman Empire, which had taken the city, in the end of the century.
The fortress withstood several sieges by Ottomans and Serbs, surviving relatively unscathed. During World War II it was heavily damaged, by explosions and bombing. As of 2009 it is in the midst of extensive restoration and conservation work, despite which the fortress remains "one of the rare preserved courts of medieval Serbian rulers."
Smederevo Fortress was declared a national Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979. In 2010, the fortress was placed on the tentative list for possible nomination as a World Heritage Site .

  • I took a bus from Belgrade to Smederevo as I specifically wanted to see the fortress. I was very disappointed with it. Huge walls but very little to really see. One section you can climb a stair to th...  more »
  • ... you should look at the fortress. Actually, the fortress consists almost only of the outer walls and a fortress courtyard on the Danube side. But this farm offers you a beautiful view of the Danube and great opportunities for photos. It is possible to climb one of the towers and take a short tour of the fortress walls. Admission to the farm is €1. At the entrance there are two stone seer with Cyrillic writing. The larger panel says that during the occupation by the Wehrmacht, several wagons loaded with ammunition exploded, killing 2,500. The castle side to the station was also badly damaged by the explosion, which can be seen well on the leaning towers. Cons: Unfortunately, the maintenance of the system is or. the behaviour of the visitors is deficient. There is a noticeable amount of plastic waste to be seen.

  • Definitely worth the visit. Nicely reconstructed, great view of Danube and the park is made for afternoon chill.
  • Place with a little of history and a little of modern touches. Nice festivals inside the fortress and a plesent environment to walk.
