Feel the weight of iron shackles at La Maison des Esclaves, part of a World Heritage Site and a memorial to Atlantic slave trade that once took place on Goree Island. Pass through the "Door of No Return," through which slaves boarded slaver ships that took them to overseas plantations halfway around the world. Built in 1776 with two curved staircases, the pink two-story house features a number of exhibits and tables describing the dishonorable trade that separated generations of families. You can examine shackles, whips, flintlocks, and other equipment used for enslavement, and see a statue of a freed slave holding broken shackles--a symbol of his liberation. La Maison des Esclaves Reviews
Le plus gros de l'expérience est dans votre tête, il ne reste quasiment rien de l'époque. Ca ne vaut pas la peine de venir à Gorée pour ça, mais si vous y êtes, faites-y un tour more »Most of the experience is in your head, there's almost nothing left of the time. It's not worth coming to Gorée for that, but if you're there, take a walk.
Première visite de notre voyage aux Sénégal , guide vraiment sympa, on a fait le circuit à l envers des autres...car il y a du monde. Nice alley, very nice painter, remains of magnificent navaronne cannons... despite the heat.... to see absolutely. The house of slaves to see but difficult to stay there
Goree and the House of Slaves has been on my list of places to visit for years. Everything from the boat ride to the island to walking inside of the holding chambers was a very touching experience. Many of the chambers were well preserved which made the experience worthwhile. It was important for me to have my children to have the experience as well.
I came to Senegal not knowing any history so visiting this historical site was eye opening to say the least. A must visit when in Dakar. The tour/talk while short was good.
