View models, photos, and personal items that tell the story of the pivotal battle of Stalingrad at State Historical and Memorial Preserve The Battle of Stalingrad. Regarded as the turning point of World War II by many historians, the battle raged on from August 1942 to February 1943 and claimed approximately 1.5 million lives on both sides of the Russo-German conflict. Learn about the war in Russia and how Volgograd was devastated in one day. View a sword that was a gift to the city from the British empire to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad, and Zaytsev's sniper rifles exhibit. The top floor, only accessible as part of a guided tour, features a 360-degree panoramic painting of the battlefield in 1942 from the location of the monument on Mamayev Kurgan.
