'The Motherland Calls' Sculpture, Volgograd

4.9
See one of the enduring icons of Soviet Russia at 'The Motherland Calls' Sculpture, a towering monument dedicated to one of the country's great World War II triumphs--the battle of Stalingrad. Climb the 200 steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the battle, which lead from the bottom of the hill to the base of the monument. The sculpture represents a woman raising a sword in an act of defiance while extending her other arm in a calling gesture. Measuring 85 m (279 ft) from the tip of the sword to the top of the plinth, it is the world's tallest statue of a woman. The model for the statue was a native of the city who is still recognized for her resemblance to it. Notice how the plinth leans to the side due to seeping groundwater. • Were a family with young children on a short holiday. From Volgograd 120 km. We couldn't help but visit the city of Hero with its significant historical values. Just today the scaffolding was removed after the reconstruction. Power, power and greatness! Eternal memory of the dead, for our future!

  • The sculpture is second to none. Being a work of a genius, it evokes a wide range of emotions. Currently is being renovated until April, 2020. But don't be sorry if you find the view a bit obstructed. Its enormous presence is still there. And this is the first time this sculpture is being renovated almost in a century, so consider it an opportunity to see it in a different way
  • It is a touching place to visit. You can feel the sense of Russian pride of its nation.
