Modeled after one of the Vatican's major landmarks, Kazan Cathedral houses a world-famous icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most significant religious images of Orthodox Christianity. Built in the early years of the 19th century, the classically designed building boasts a massive dome, dominating this part of the city from a height of some 80 m (260 ft). The lavishly decorated cathedral features numerous columns, sculptures, and icons, created by some of the biggest names in Russian art. Famed sculptor Boris Orlovsky designed the bronze statues of the Napoleonic War heroes Barclay de Tolly and Mikhail Kutuzov, whose remains lie interred inside the cathedral. At the intersection of Nevsky Avenue and the River Krivushi there were wooden buildings of the hospital and the houses of its employees. In 1710, a chapel was built at the hospital, and in 1712 a wooden church of the Kazan Mother of God was erected in its place. On August 24, 1733, Empress Anna Ioannovna ordered to build a stone cathedral here, the laying of which took place on September 6. The prototype of the Christmas church was The Cathedral of Petropavlovsk. On July 2, 1737, the Kazan icon of the Mother of God was moved here from the Trinity Church. On July 3, 1737, in the presence of Anna Ioannovna, a solemn consecration of the Christmas Church, popularly named after the icon "Kazan" located here, took place. Since 1991, Kazan Cathedral has been reopened for worship. Today I was present at the service, the soul is warmed and cleansed. I recommend visiting as a group and alone.
Kazan cathedral is located near Nevsky ave metro station on Nevsky Avenue. It is opposite to the Savior of Spilled blood church. The entry to Kazan cathedral is free however, photography is not allowed inside. The building has an aesthetic touch to it and reveals a lot about its history. Around the area, you have shopping stores and a busy market. You can spot the iconic church easily while roaming around the streets of Nevsky avenue.
Just stumbled upon this while walking, super glad I stopped and checked it out. One of the prettier cathedrals I went in, actually. Plus, it was free! Remember to be respectful of those worshiping inside, and enjoy!
