Volcano Gorely, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Gorely is a volcano located in the southern part of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. It consists of five overlapping stratovolcanoes and is one of the most active in southern Kamchatka.
Gorely is a large, long-lived shield-type volcano that is currently in an eruptive phase. Prior eruptions occurred in 1980-81 and 1984-86.
Several complexes compose the overall volcanic structure:
- ancient Pra-Gorely volcano which measures 20–25 km in diameter;
- a 12 km diameter caldera;
- thick stratum of ignimbrites totaling a volume of 100 km3;
- post-caldera eruption cinder cones;
- modern edifice – “Young Gorely” composed of three large superimposed cones and 11 associated craters forming a NW-SE trending intra-caldera ridgeline;
- a complex of 40 modern subsidiary cones on the slopes of “Young Gorely”.
In 2010, activity began to increase, suggesting the Volcano was waking up. The Aviation Color Code has been raised to Yellow, and a new vent has been discovered on the inner South east wall of the crater

  • Came to the volcano during the tour "Bears, volcanoes, killer whales" from kamchatkaland. We pulled up and found that the volcano is almost covered with clouds to the ground, and it is not possible to climb it. Alternatively, we visited several caves at the base of the volcano. The most famous is "Musical" (it sometimes hosts concerts). But during our visit to the concerts it was far away, and it differed from the rest of it only the best acoustics and large sizes. Other caves were smaller and more cluttered. It is desirable to have more powerful lanterns and gloves, because the caves are quite cool, they are partially icy. Attention attracts the ceiling, stone-grown on which formed not by the build-up of dissolved limestone, and by the frozen ceiling of volcanic lava.

  • A wonderful active volcano. The last eruption was in 2010. Available by 4WD, the road from the city will take 4 hours (5 if you drive carefully). Along the way, on the pass - a beautiful view of the Vilyuchin volcano. Climbing the Fire takes from 1.5 to 6 hours, depending on the level of training of the person. You need to take water and warm things with you. To the top leads a good path - we climbed in the usual sneakers. In the photos - a view of the first crater, which opens immediately after the ascent. Another crater can be seen if a little pass away.

  • Probably the easiest volcano available for climbing. On average, the ascent takes a half two hours. On the edge of the crater opens a stunning view of the lake, the main thing is lucky with the weather. Burnt very capricious volcano, often as we had this year was cloudy and cloudy, on top stood as in milk.
