Chkalov Monument, Nizhny Novgorod

#6 of 265 in Things to do in Nizhny Novgorod
Monument · Tourist Spot
By flying his plane from Moscow to Vancouver, Washington, in 1937, Valery Chalkov pioneered the polar route, earning him the status of a hero in the Soviet Union. Chalkov was born in a town close to Nizhny Novgorod and after his premature death the city chose to honor him with an impressive monument on its kremlin. From the plateau on which the monument is located you can gaze over the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. Leading up to the site is an elegantly designed row of more than 500 steps, also dedicated to Chalkov. Make Chkalov Monument a centerpiece of your Nizhny Novgorod vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Nizhny Novgorod trip planner.
