Suspension bridge of East River, Sainte-Rose

#6 of 8 in Things to do in Sainte-Rose
A historic monument serving as a tourist promenade, Suspension bridge of East River has withstood the test of time by surviving all tropical cyclones, floods, and landslides that hit the island in the 20th century. An engineering wonder and the longest bridge in the world at the time of construction (in 1894), this suspension bridge rests on two massive stone pillars. Its 152 m (499 ft) long wooden deck was open for motorized traffic until 1979. A walk across the bridge offers scenic views of the gorge and the birds flying over it. Note that the bridge sometimes closes in inclement weather.
