Notre-Dame des Laves, Sainte-Rose

#2 of 18 in Historic Sites in Reunion Island
Notre-Dame des Laves draws visitors with one extraordinary feature of its interior: a solidified lava flow. This small Catholic church survived the 1977 volcanic eruption unscathed, but for a narrow stream of lava that penetrated 3 m (10 ft) deep into the nave's interior. The large front stained glass windows depict the eruption, created by Madagascar-born artist Guy Lefevre. Since 2000, the church's courtyard is home to a statue of the "lady with a parasol," ascribed miraculous powers to protect the island from volcanic eruptions. • A quick stop to watch this church spared by the lava flow. Finally spared, when we look at the photos exhibited in the building, we can see that the lava came in anyway, but hey .......

  • Mysterious, why was this church avoided by lava? It's one of the miraculous things depending on whether you're a believer or not !!!. Otherwise the church is very pretty, very clear
