Piton de Fournaise, Saint-Benoit

4.8
Must see · Volcano · Nature / Park
One of the world's most active volcanoes at present, Piton de Fournaise sits within a World Heritage-listed national park. At the lower parts of the volcano, accessible from the highway, you can see recently cooled lava flows. To reach the volcano rim you'll have to drive through the forest, first on a highway and then on a bumpy track. From there on, a well-maintained stairway (closed during seismic activity) leads down to the caldera floor. Wear good hiking shoes and layers of clothing since the weather below the rim changes quickly. Don't wander off the marked trails, especially in foggy weather. Confirm accessibility before you go to avoid disappointment. Put Piton de Fournaise and other Saint-Benoit attractions into our Saint-Benoit tour builder app, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • It is currently unclear whether the eruption still continues. The volcano observatory reported a sudden strong decrease in volcanic tremor was detected this afternoon at 14:00 local time, which probably means that magma supply drastically dropped or even ceased.
  • Absolutely beautiful and almost surreal but think again before attempting to climb it! It is a very long, very, very difficult walk /climb! My husband and I could only manage to climb half way before giving up (and taking the helicopter ride the next morning!)
