Piton des Neiges, Cilaos

#2 of 6 in Parks in Cilaos
Must see · Mountain · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Holding the title of largest mountain in the Indian Ocean, Piton des Neiges stands as a 3,069 m (10,069 ft) shield volcano. The peak of the volcano is the highest point on the island; it has been inactive for over 20,000 years. Three medium-difficulty trails allow hikers access the volcano’s peak, but they are lengthy--taking up to 12 hours for a round-trip to the peak. Many hikers opt to take two days, allowing them to witness a sunrise the next morning. A mountain hut near the top provides food and overnight lodging. The volcano is surrounded by three crater valleys--referred to as the Cirques--and the lower slopes of the volcano feature a biological reserve of endemic flowering plants.
