  • We took a trip with Laletours to the island of Golem Grad at the beginning of May. On the Laletours website, Golem Grad is listed as Pelican Island, but on the internet you can also find it under Snake Island. Being out of season just outside the season, we made contact with Laletours by email and asked if a tour to Golem Grad would be possible. We received a private tour for 2 people. Start was a little south of Ohrid, where we travelled with our car. (Way flawless). We were driven over the mountain with a jeep by our English-speaking guide (1st stop overlooking the lake and food), then on to Stenje. A quiet, almost desert-looking place. Here you can see birds flying and it's just quiet. The Jeep then took it over stock-and-stone gravel road to Konjsko, where the boat was made fit by the guide. In just under 30min we were on the island of Golem Grad. Along the way, we saw the first pelicans. 1x Around the island by boat there are impressive glimpses of the rock formations and a lot of cormorants. On the island we got sandwiches and salad from Laletour. We saw the first water snake pre-bogus and the guide explained everything to us about the snakes on Snake Island. The first wild bunny hopped by and turtles could be seen all over the wayside. Until now, I didn't know that turtles also eat bunny meat ... We wandered leisurely across the small island and felt like little adventurers. Always looking for snakes or other animals. On the side of the island, where the steep rocks fall down, were the breeding grounds and nests of the cormorants. At that time, the boys were just hatching. Fish smell, Vögellärm. A place to stay. After about 2 hours we had explored the island and we went with our guide first by boat and then by jeep on the way back. We can only recommend the island. A little paradise. Untouched. Great scenery. We were lucky that that day were really only 2 boats and 5 more people on the island. We did the tour with Laletours and were very pleased. Also for the reason that we could not have driven our car the last bit between Stenje and Konjsko unscathed. There are several boats in Konjsko. I think if you want to try it without a booked tour, try your luck in Konjsko and ask for a boat crossing (cost is. Internet search €50). Long speech short sense: LaleTours-5 out of 5 stars. The Snake Island aka Pelican Island aka Reptile Island aka Bird Island aka Golem Grad-an absolute must-see if you are nearby and want to spend an adventurous day in Macedonia. Thanks to LaleTours for the great day!

  • Also known as Snake Island, it is a sanctuary for its last and for land turtles. It is also known to house many species of birds, such as black cormorants and pelicans. Departure by boat can be done from Stenje (2x1h30, €50 per group, several departures per day-see my comment on Stenje for details) or closer but less accessible, from Konysko (€20 per group). In any case, it can only be done from Macedonia, even if the island is on the border with Albania and Greece. Count between 1h and 2H on site. There are two churches, one from the 14th century and another from the 5th century, as well as many Roman ruins, including thermal baths. On the fauna side, we could see many turtles, but unfortunately no earthly erpent as far as we are concerned. On the other hand, on the shore, one has, with patience, been able to observe some water snakes. In the end, with the boat ride, then the tour of the island from the shore and on the Mainland, we enjoyed the exit, even if the snakes were to the absent subscribers.

  • Its a unique experience to be on the boat and spot wildlife here and there. It is quite close to three countries: namely Macedonia, Albania, and Greece
  • Beautiful Island, lots of turtles.
