Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Lisbon District / Sintra Municipality / Sintra / Palacio de Monserrate
Nestled on a gentle green slope, Palacio de Monserrate presents a mix of Portuguese, Arabian, and Indian architectural styles surrounded by gardens of exotic plants. Built in 1858 for Sir Francis Cook--one of Britain's three richest men at the time--the palace features a range of styles and details that are uncommon on the Iberian Peninsula. Join a guided tour or take a leisurely walk around the site. Watch for lavishly decorated windows, walls, and arches, and walk through long hallways lined with marble pillars. View opulent gardens that host rare and expensive plants, and look for the remains of an old chapel at the site amidst the thick roots of overgrown trees. Palacio de Monserrate Reviews
Palacio de Monserrate is not very big but gorgeous. It is about 2 km from Quinta da Regaleira, so you can visit both palaces in one day. It takes 1.5- 2 hours to visit the palace and the garden... more »
Very small palace, with only few rooms. Interesting story behind it, worth reading as you walk through it. Make sure you thoroughly explore surrounding park, some amazing trees and plants. Altogether.... more »
Beautiful grounds. Inexpensive entrance price. The house was beautiful - quite empty of furniture when we attended, but this allowed us to see the decor more easily. On the day we went, a lot of the gardens were closed due to fire safety. This is an important and necessary precaution, but it might be worth checking if this will happen during your visit.
Wow. Absolutely stunning building, and almost no one there! The gardens are amazing, and it wld have been easy to wander for hours. They have specific paths recommended for those w limited mobility, and a free little shuttle that can drive you to the main spots, but if you are willing/able to walk on rougher terrain, it's worth it. We really enjoyed it. The cafe was cute. Signs throughout so you don't get lost.
