View the human skulls and bones decorating the interior walls of Capela dos Ossos. A Franciscan monk built this chapel in the 16th century to encourage contemplation about the afterlife and our fleeting time on earth. At the entrance to the Church of St. Francis, you will find this small chapel, which contains the skeletons of approximately 5,000 monks. Skulls and bones cover the eight pillars inside the structure, as well as its walls, and two skeletons hang from ropes. The ceiling is brick and painted with themes of death. Though not for the faint of heart, this site represents a look into a particular time and belief system. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Evora trip simple and quick.

Capela dos Ossos reviews
At the historic center of Évora, next to the famous "Igreja de São Francisco", stands "Capela dos Ossos" - literally "Chapel of Bones", in English. Dating from the 17th century, with clear Gothic... more »
This is a strange place. You are confronted with a room full of human bones and left to contemplate the brevity of the human lifespan. more »
"Our bones lay here and they await yours!" The main thing to see at this site is the chapel of bones. It's super creepy and I loved it! It cost a little money to get in to this building but I still recommend checking it out. Bones line all the walls of this chapel and they have all been carefully placed so that certain types of bones are grouped together to make it look more visually appealing. There are other things to check out in this building as well but nothings really compares to the chapel. The town is also very cute so you might want to spend a little time walking around.
Impressive but not really worth the steep entrance fee of 5 euros. The chapel is literally just the one room. Interesting to look at but if you have seen the ones in Prague or other places, you can probably skip. The ancillary exhibitions that are included were also only mildly interesting. The rooftop deck is nice but baking hot with no shade or bar, a wasted opportunity in my opinion. You’re probably better off looking at the pictures and spending more time in the church which is free.
