Monastery of Alcobaca
The first Gothic building and the largest Gothic religious structure in Portugal, Monastery of Alcobaca presents royal rooms, tombs, a blue-tiled kitchen, and colossally high interior spaces. Formed in the 12th century and developed until the 18th century, the monastery was home to generations of monks and is the final resting place to many kings and queens, including Afonso II and Urraca of Castile, Afonso III and Beatrice of Castile, and King Pedro I and his mistress. See the insides of the monastery--rising over 20 m (65 ft)--and visit the 18th-century kitchen, which reveals the Cistercian monks' astonishing mastery of hydraulic engineering. You can take a guided tour at the site. Plan to visit Monastery of Alcobaca and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Alcobaca attractions using our Alcobaca trip itinerary maker website.

This has the most amazing kitchen you could ever imagine. The love story of Pedro and Ines is so sad and seeing their resting place and decorative tombs is a must.

Has to be my favorite place I visited in Portugal. Is the inspirational love story of “Romeo and Juliet” maybe that’s the reason I appreciated its location, a true representation that love never ends at least that’s one of the stories told. The Gothic architecture design was built by Alfonso Henriques.
