The National Pantheon of Heroes and Oratory of the Virgin Our Lady Saint Mary of the Asuncion, Asuncion

3.8
The National Pantheon of Heroes and Oratory of the Virgin Our Lady Saint Mary of the Asuncion keeps the memories of the country's involvement in many wars alive with a memorial to fallen soldiers. Construction of the landmark started in 1864 under leadership of Francisco Solano Lopez, who ironically led the country into a disastrous war shortly thereafter. Lopez’s body is held in the memorial along with his fellow soldiers and two unknown Paraguay soldiers; it was finally completed in 1936. Notice the plaques laid by former foes, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay, which show that old disputes are forgiven. Take a moment to absorb the history and feel the somber mood of the memorial. At the outset our books on the "War of Paraguay" document that the dictator Solano Lopes caused the "War of Paraguay" by invading Brazil through the current state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

  • It's nice and beautiful. Nothing special
  • Nice historical site. Takes a few minutes to walk around it and it is free. I wish there were plaques with more information about it.
