Loen Active reviews
First, a review for Loen Active. We did the Via Ferrata on our own, so I don't have a lot to say about the company. We brought some equipment with us, but had to rent helmets and official Loen Active.... more »
I almost need two reviews here. One for the Active Loen guides and one for the Via Ferrata. First the guides were great! I was the only one in our group that couldn’t speak Norwegian and one of... more »
My first time in Europe and I wanted to do this climb with my boyfriend who has done it before. All we needed was to rent some equipment. We showed up 2 days ahead for appointment for equipment but we were told that it was not neccessary and equipment was available. When we showed up we were met by a very unapologetic man who told us there was no way we can get any equipment. I'm going back today but maybe one day I can come back and climb without using your service, because it sucks.
We did the Via Ferrata Loen on a beautiful day in September. We had booked in advance and showed up according to the information that we had gotten in the e-mail confirmation. The getting equipment and splitting the people into groups was very unorganized. I got my harness from a guy and to start with I was not even sure he was one of the guides to start with. We also got helmets but little or no help and information on how to put on the harness. When we started the via ferrata climb one of the guides noticed that one of the participants was wearing the harness back to front. We also got very limited information on what to do when climbing. Practical advice such as where to place your hands, making sure the harness was tightened, which route to take on the way up etc was not mentioned. We were about 15-20 people in my group and our two guides was focusing on the people that were last in the group, so they just sent the rest of us in front and we were just told that we would figure it out. The via ferrata starts with a one-hour hike on a steep dirt road and steep terrain and will take you up to about 400 meters I think. From there you start the climbing but unlike other via ferrata’s that I have done, this did not contain that many inserted steps to use. In this climb you have to use the mountain itself together with the wire that you are secured to and the bolts that are used for the wires. Note that along the climb you can choose between an E or a C/D route that will both lead to the suspension bridge. The suspension bridge was fun, and it gives you a great viewpoint to Loen and the fjord below. The hike to Hoven restaurant at the top of the Loen skylift took us about 5 hours and it takes you from 0 to 1000 meters. If the weather is good, the views along the trip is amazing! We ended the trip by taking the Loen Skylift down to sea level again and that was also a fun experience. The Via Ferrata Loen as a attraction and a route is 5-star experience. But Loen Active’s setup for this is sadly not a 5-star experience. With the lack of guides along the hike, we could have saved a lot of money just by renting the equipment from them to do the hike on our own as this is basically what we did anyway.
