#8 of 12 in Childrens Museums in North Island
He Tohu is a new permanent exhibition of three iconic constitutional documents that have shaped New Zealand. "There is magic here" - Multi-award winner, Best Design Awards 2017

These are:

• 1835 He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni –

Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand

• 1840 Te Tiriti o Waitangi – Treaty of Waitangi

• 1893 Women’s Suffrage petition – Te Petihana Whakamana Pōti Wahine.

Each over a century old, these taonga bear the signatures of our ancestors. They have been carefully moved to the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa for a remarkable new permanent exhibition called He Tohu - one that every citizen, tourist and new immigrant should see, because these are the signatures that shape New Zealand.

He Tohu is more than just an exhibition. It provides an opportunity for all people, young or old, from New Zealand or visiting these shores, to freely discover more about what defines us today, and in so doing, who we will be in the future.

Explore the taonga that shape who we are, free entry at the National Library, 70 Molesworth Street Wellington. He Tohu is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

  • Wonderful exhibition which provides insights into some of the important documents of New Zealand, including the Treaty of Waitangi, which is the closest to a founding document this country has. Amazing interactives and video presentation. Been back twice, will come back again.
  • This is an awesome exhibition that every NZer should see
