Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave, Taupo District

Witness nature's power at work and admire the breathtaking landscapes at Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave. Known for centuries for its geysers, thermal pools, terraces, and naturally carved geological formations, this area remains one of New Zealand's oldest and best-known tourist attractions. The famous Ruatapu Cave, with its pool of warm acid water, is just one of numerous monuments of geothermal activity you'll encounter in the area. A network of boardwalks gives you easy access to all of the thermal field's main points of interest, but be aware that numerous steps along the trail make it difficult to navigate for wheelchairs. However, the visitor's center is fully accessible to everyone, and in addition to souvenirs, informative material, and cold drinks it provides free-of-charge baby carriers to visitors with little ones. • This is an impressive place of natural wonder: Three to four levels of cascading terraces, with the associated steam, hot pools, geysers, and many other volcanic features. We take a boat, across the lake, to the base of these massive terraces and actually walk on them! The walkway takes us along every level, up to the top to see a cave and some bubbling mud pools.
  • Wow what a super interesting place! Ive never been to anything like it and found it really intriguing. Arriving at the park we were treated with stunning views of the mountains and lake with the steam rising from the ground. You then take a little boat to cross the lake over to where all the action happens. The walk around the park is magical. Watching all the bubbling water, steam rising from the ground, bubbly mud pools and water spurts. The whole walk takes around 1 hour or so and is a fairly easy walk. There are a lot of steps though so you will need to be able to handle that. It’s a great walk and well worth it.
