Lady Knox Geyser, Rotorua

The Lady Knox Geyser is a geyser in the Waiotapu area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand. It is named after Lady Constance Knox, the second daughter of Uchter Knox, 15th Governor of New Zealand. The geyser is induced to erupt daily at 10:15am by dropping a surfactant into the opening of the vent. Eruptions produce a jet of water reaching up to 20m and can last for over an hour, depending on the weather. The visible spout is made of rocks placed around the base of the spring to enhance the eruption; over the years silica from the eruptions has built up to give a white cone-shaped appearance.

Because the geyser was discovered early in the 20th century, it has no Māori name, unlike almost every other thermal feature in New Zealand.

  • Watch the time so you won't miss out the big Lady Knox Geyser in its highest peak. But don't worry, even after the first eruption, which can go up to 20 meters high, the geyser is still active for almost an hour. That means you can even get a shot like a did because 80% of the people in there leave after the first 20 minutes.
  • I had never seen a geyser in action. It's strange and funny. It's like a hot fountain when start to spray out water. I know it is a natural phenomenon so I did jot expect yo find a guide that talk to the public and then put into the hole soap (natural soap) to start the reaction. Nice to see but seems a little bit artificial.
