Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Northland Region / Opononi / Tane Mahuta Walk
Peer up at the largest living kauri tree at Tane Mahuta Walk, a protected sanctuary since the 1950s. Reach the ancient tree via a short boardwalk, leading through the leafy native vegetation. Sit by the base of the immense 4.9 m (16.1 ft) wide trunk, dwarfed only by the tree's 45 m (148 ft) height. Head farther along the track to a second viewing platform for a wider view this giant, allegedly well over a thousand years old. Stay on the boardwalk at all times to avoid tripping over the tree's vulnerable surface roots. Drive out of your way to see this spectacular tree - Lord of the Forest. Over 50 meters tall (160 feet) and nearly 14 meters (46 feet) in girth. It is like the Sequoias in the USA, but even more... more »
Being over 6ft myself, I felt insignificant in size, standing in the presence of a massive 2,000 years+ living Kauri Tree “Tane Mahuta” as it makes one feel slightly in awe of it. This incredible... more »
. (02/2019) This walk is part of tourist attraction and biggest Kauri Tree alive, Tane Mahuta. It is located over state highway and is easy to notice from a moving vehicle in normal traffic. Easily accessible. The entrance is well organised and maintained for visitors to clean their shoes before entering and exiting the walkway. Detailed description and maps are provided over the boards near entrance. Well maintained. Clean and obstacle free walkway. Beautiful views are presented around the walkway while walking and tree can be directly viewed from different points. The name translates to God of forests and of birds. There is interesting history behind identification and preservation of this tree. Seating and benches are provided at regular distances for taking rest and enjoying the views. Good place for quick visits or spending quality time. Parking is available around the entrance. Dedicated wheelchair parking is not available and entrance is not wheelchair accessible. Public restroom is available near parking area.
Nice quick stop when you are already in the area. Unfortunately I was very busy/ loud and quite touristy when we were there but still a magical place. :)
