Moeraki Boulders Beach, Oamaru

4.1
While on the Otago coast don't miss the chance to visit Moeraki Boulders Beach, one of the most famous natural attractions on the whole South Island. Scattered along the beach, these enigmatic rocks weigh up to several tons and many of them have an almost perfect spherical shape. While science identifies the boulders as concretions that have formed over millions of years, there are also many less scientific and legendary theories about their origin. The pristine beach on which the boulders are located is easily accessible and the nearby parking lot saves you a long hike to admire this famous phenomenon. Discover how to plan a Oamaru trip in just a few steps with Inspirock's itinerary builder.

  • Nature is a surprising beach that produces mysterious things. If it is not two hours before and after low tide, this scenery will sink into the sea. It is not accessible by bus, so it is a tourist destination for people with rental cars. If it's from a parking lot with a coffee shop, the admission fee of 2 dollars per person is (optionally) access from the public parking lot, although you need to walk a little, but it is free. But the sou food chowder at the cafe was delicious!

  • It's truly out of the world kinda unique place. The best time is to go there when it's a low tide around sunrise to capture best photos. The walk is quite short, there are a few stairs too. Please remember gold coins for using the private walkway or use the public walkway along the beach.
  • We stopped here on our from Oamaru to Dunedin. The tide had just gone out so we were able to get a good view of the boulders as well as take some lovely photos. If you don't eat at the cafe, they ask that you give a $2 donation to gain access to the beach area.
