Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / South Island / Canterbury Region / Mackenzie District / Lake Tekapo / Dark Sky Project
Formerly Earth & Sky, Dark Sky Project is proud to be regarded as world-leaders in astro tourism experiences. We're located in Takapō (Tekapo) in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the world's largest and first gold tier Dark Sky Reserve.
For over 15 years we've hosted hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (visitors) on a range of stargazing and observatory experiences, connecting them to the night skies and creating a sense of wonder.
In July 2019 we take our next step, relaunching ourselves as Dark Sky Project and opening a new astronomy centre on Takapō (Tekapo) lakefront. This centre will feature lakefront dining, sophisticated and contemporary retail and, most excitingly, a new indoor multi-media experience that combines science and tātai aroraki (maori astronomy).
Nau mai haere mai - we look forward to hosting you. Make Dark Sky Project a centerpiece of your Lake Tekapo vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Lake Tekapo visit planner.

Great views from here! Enjoyed a nice cup of tea and slice of cake in the restaurant/cafe which was crazy busy, staff always remained friendly and polite. Lucked out with some nice seats overlooking the lake. Afterwards we went walkabout on our own, lovely and relaxing walk. Be sure to dress for windy weather!
What a great place 😍 we went to the restaurant for tea so yummy and the staff were super friendly and accommodating, we didn't have to wait long for our meal and it was presented beautifully. Will definitely be back. The bathroom was really clean and smelled nice. 👍👍👍👍
