Te Mata Peak, Hastings

Climb Te Mata Peak to the lookout point for bracing air and spectacular views. The 399 m (1,309 ft) high peak provides a great vantage point for the surrounding area, including the Heretaunga Plains and Hawke's Bay. Many short and longer trails for hiking and mountain biking crisscross the peak, with options for beginning, intermediate, and advanced hikers. The site has significance in Maori legend, and archeological research in the surrounding park suggests it was heavily settled at some point by indigenous communities. European settlers largely deforested the peak and surrounding area, which is now a combination of rocky cliffs and green rolling hills and valleys. • Went there and found it so beautiful.
  • The view from Te Mata Peak is beautiful .... just as well as the car ride to the Peak is nothing short of hair raising!! Narrow road with little vision around the corners, it's a drive not for the faint hearted. But once you are at the peak, the 360 degree view of Hastings and surrounds is lovely.
